Translating

Opening a project shows its workspace: a list of strings on the left, and optionally the live preview on the right.

Finding what to work on

  • Filters along the top, each with a count:
    • To do: strings that need Irish, or whose English has changed. The workspace opens here.
    • Check: strings whose English changed only slightly. The Irish is still used; confirm it still fits.
    • Done and All.
  • Sections: the list on the left groups strings by namespace, the part of the app they belong to, with how many are left in each.
  • Search: press / to search the key, the English and the Irish.

A string you save under To do stays in place until you change the view, so it doesn't jump away from under you.

Each string's status

StatusMeaning
Needs IrishNo Irish yet. The app shows the English until it is translated.
English changedThe English was reworded after the Irish was written. The old Irish is shown next to the new English, with the changed words marked.
Small English editOnly case, spacing or punctuation changed. The Irish is still used.
DoneTranslated for the current English.

Saving

Nothing is saved until you press Save or Ctrl+Enter. Your unsaved edits are kept as drafts, even if you close the tab. If you have several unsaved strings, Save all saves them together.

Each save is a new version. Nothing is ever overwritten, so a mistake can always be undone from the string's history.

Help while translating

  • Suggestions. When you open a string, the editor shows Irish already written for the same or similar English, in any project. "Same English" means the English matches exactly. Suggestions are never applied on their own, because the same English can need different Irish in a different context.
  • Fill from identical English. If some strings have English that is already translated elsewhere, a Fill N from identical English button appears. It lists every match for you to review before anything is saved.
  • Checks. The editor warns you if the Irish is missing a placeholder such as {{name}} or a tag that is in the English.
  • Notes. Use Add note to record where a string appears or what it means, for whoever translates it next.
  • History. History on a string lists every version saved, who saved it and when. Use brings an earlier version back into the box.

When the English has changed

A string marked English changed shows the old and new English with the differing words highlighted, and the Irish written for the old English. You can:

  • edit the Irish and save it for the new English; or
  • press Keep as is (Alt+K) if the old Irish still fits.

For a Small English edit, press Confirm if the Irish still fits.

Rewording the English

Sometimes the English itself needs fixing, such as a typo or awkward wording. Click Edit English on a string, change it and press Save English. The apps show your reworded English instead of the code's.

If a developer later changes that string in the code, the developer's English is used and your rewording stops applying.

Working at the same time as someone else

The workspace updates live when someone else saves.

  • If someone saves a string while you are editing it, you can choose Use theirs or Keep mine.
  • If the English changes while you are typing, the editor tells you so you can check your Irish still fits.
